Finding Books In the Library Catalog
You can use Subject or Keyword searches to find books on your topic. The catalog uses Library of Congress Subject Headings, which may be found in detail in: Reference 025.49 L61 Library of Congress Subject Headings, or on the Library of Congress web site where you can search for subject headings. When you put in a search term, the results will list terms in a table. Those with a red button marked, "Authorized and references" are terms that the Library of Congress uses in subject catalogs. Clicking the button may show more specific ("narrower") terms.
The catalog is accessible off campus at http://library.chemeketa.edu/information/cataloghome.php.
Some Subject Headings To Use
- Early Childhood Education
- Education, preschool
- Education - History (also try these terms in Keyword search)
- Kindergarten
- [Name of educator] (last name first: Dewey, John)
- Nursery Schools

Stumped?
You should be able to find information on historic figures in education in reference books listed at the top of this page, and in the reserve books at the circulation desk. Below are listed some "best bets" for finding information in other sources. Periodical database searches for the less famous individuals may be tricky at times, and no search will bring up 100% relevant results. You will need your My Chemeketa user name and password to access the articles.
Comenius
Try this search in Google Scholar:
+Comenius +child* +education
Look for a PDF file an article in the United Nations journal, Prospects.
In Gale General OneFile try this in the advanced search page search:
Change Keyword to Entire Document in the dropdown menu; in the search space type
comenius n10 child*
Click on Academic Journals in the Content Types menu on the result screen.
Or try: Comenius search
Erasmus
Look up Erasmus in the library catalog.
Several of Erasmus's works on education are available in full text on the Internet. Some that pertain to education are Concerning the Aim and Method of Education, and Colloquies of Erasmus. The latter contains the colloquies "The School-master's Admonitions" and "Scholastic Studies". Use the search function of your browser (Ctrl-F) to search within the text.
Look for Erasmus in the Encyclopedia of children and childhood in history and society (REF 305.2303 En1). You might try looking up Erasmus, who is known primarily as a philosopher, in the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, which is shelved in Reference at the call number REF 100 R76.
Look up "Erasmus, Desiderius" in Education Full Text.
Froebel
Try the Encyclopedia of education and human development.
Go to the History of American Education site listed above, click European Influences, and look for "Froebel."
In Gale Educator's Reference Complete on the library Database Page, try searching for Froebel and sort results by relevance.
Gerber
If you don't find a printed book, try an electronic one. Our e-books appear in the library catalog, but going to the e-book database lets you search in the full text of all its books. Go to list of book databases and try ebrary College Complete, the largest collection. Search for her name with quotation marks around it.
Journal articles on Gerber are scarce. If you don't find one in one of our education databases, try Google Scholar, an academic version of the search engine. Articles or books with available links are shown at the right side of the results page. You may have to page through the results list a bit. Try adding a term like "mindful parenting" to your search:
"Magda Gerber" mindful parenting
McMillan sisters
Try the Spartacus Online Encyclopedia of British History. On this page you will find a link to "British Education," where you can find articles about Margaret and Rachel McMillan.
Or try a Google Scholar search on the Web for the following (exactly as printed below):
+"Margaret McMillan" "early childhood"
In Educator's Reference Complete try searching for "Margaret McMillan" in the full text of the article, or try this McMillan search.

Pestalozzi
For reference books, try Discovering Collection, the Encyclopedia of education and human development, or one of the printed reference books listed above.
Look in the library catalog under "Pestalozzi" as a title key word.
OR
In Gale Educator's Reference Complete try this search:
Pestalozzi and early childhood
in the full text of the article. Sort the results by Relevance.
In Educator's Reference Complete, search for "Pestalozzi" as a keyword, limiting results to full-text articles.
Pikler
